Conference Theme: Innovation and Leadership in Managing Data as a National Treasure

The theme of the conference will be: ''Innovation and Leadership in Managing Data as a National Treasure''. The objective of this conference is to encourage innovative thinking amongst policy formulators responsible for the management of data and information relating to natural resources - oil, gas, coal, water, minerals and metals. Being hosted in South Africa gives us a unique opportunity for the expansion of the scope of the NDR Conferences into the area of minerals and metals. The conference will create the opportunity for government officials and policy formulators to obtain insight into what is being done internationally in managing data as a national treasure and incorporation of other disciplines of data through the establishment of NDC's. IOC's will share their experience on benefits and pitfalls of establishing NDC's. The conference will also create a platform for discussing regional cooperation on the subject of managing data and information. Petroleum Agency SA, as the hosting NDR, will use the opportunity to promote its role as the body responsible for managing the national oil & gas resources in SA and, together with similar local organizations, will it promote South Africa as a country with great potential, technical capacity and resources to encourage further investment into the region. Delegates from NDR's and IOC's will get the opportunity to benchmark organizational functions with that of other NDR's, including adding value to data, promotional, fiscal and regulatory functions. Some countries manages their resources such as oil and gas, minerals, water and interfaces with associated issues such as environmental, fisheries and transportation through the NDC. Different models exist and it will be beneficial for governmental representatives to benchmark what is being done internationally in the establishment of NDC's. Petroleum Agency SA, as the national agency responsible for the management of oil & gas exploration data in South Africa, wishes to encourage politicians locally, nationally and internationally in innovative thinking around the management of data and information as a national treasure. Petroleum Agency SA benefited in the past from this type of conference where the emphasis has been on the use of the latest technologies, standardization, benchmarking similar international organizations and the development of policies to improve access to data. This industry has been exposed to major changes during the last years and there is a need to stay ahead of technology in the field of E&P data management in order to effectively control, manage and safeguard data.
